Concept art for our 3rd year students

No 3D animated film without concept art! A preliminary creative stage that determines the visual appearance of a film, concept art gives rise to many subjects at the MoPA animation film school. Our 3rd year students had to create a 3D environment and carry out a character design exercise.

CONCEPT ART - ENVIRONMENT

Matte painting is a technique used in animated film to create a 3D environment. Used to bring to life worlds and landscapes that don't exist, such as futuristic cities or imaginary countries, this process is essential for characterising an interior or exterior location. The aim for our 3D animation students? To tell a story that everyone can understand in a single image, by creating their own city! To achieve this, our young animators are invited to imagine their place as a character, giving it a personality and a soul. Here's a closer look at five of our students' productions!

David OPOH

"For this project, I was inspired by a world of Pokémon mixed with surrealism. The first step in my thought process was to be able to combine nature with artificial machines. The next step was aesthetics, so I used good sunset lighting and blue artificial light to bring out this futuristic beauty."

Louis BOUET

"I've always loved oriental architecture. When I was looking for references, I came across images of sandstorms several times, which inspired me to create this semi-buried city that was once teeming with life. I wanted to place the camera in the air, overlooking the town, to give the impression that this town is small compared to the elements of nature, surrounded by mountains, it seems isolated from the rest of the world. I used the ‘The Bazaar’ pack from the unreal engine marketplace for the buildings.

Sydney ANDJEL

"I took inspiration from Armored Core VI by trying to recapture that sense of grandeur in the scene. I wanted to imagine what a futuristic trading platform might look like after experiencing a post-apocalyptic period."

Melissa PARLATO

"Neoncitylights, the megacity fortress with its dizzying towers, the most futuristic in the galaxy. I imagined the entrance to this city by creating a 3D base and then pushing the limits of the lights for this sharp, colourful rendering."

Noémie PETTE

"I've always really liked Eric Puybarret's book Les Echasses Rouges. For this project, where we had to create a city of our choice, I thought it would be a good opportunity to draw inspiration from it, while adding a slightly fantastic and mystical atmosphere. After pushing the lighting as far as I could in 3D, I retouched the image in Photoshop. By drawing on my rendering, I was able to create a richer atmosphere.

CONCEPT ART - CHARACTER DESIGN

Through the character design exercise, the students were asked to define the archetype of a character who meets the definition of a ‘young spirit of Nature’ from Latin America. The panel featuring each student's character should enable us to learn more about them: what is their story? Where do they live? How did they get here? How do they evolve in their environment? Just like creating the 3D environment, the aim here is to bring the character to life and tell a story through their visuals. Discover three ideas from our students!

Anaëlle BOYER

"For this project, we had to invent a young spirit of nature in South America. I found out about the lakes in Peru, where there are herons. I found the atmosphere interesting and that's how I came up with the idea of a young boy living by the lakes, perched on stilts. Pre-production was an important stage in my project, which enabled me to frame my ideas properly and avoid going too far astray."

Claire CAPARROS

"When I found out about the largest eagle in South America, I knew straight away that I wanted to transpose the dramatic silhouette of the Fierce Harpy into my chara-design. The majestic look of the eagle mixed with the colours of tropical birds inspired me to create a character who was (a little too) proud and vain, but who became disorientated as soon as he was taken out of his comfort zone. I liked the search for quick poses and moods to characterise a character in his environment."

Ludmila FLACHAIRE

"When I discovered monkey-head orchids, I knew straight away that I wanted to make a character out of them in the style of The Spiderwick Chronicles. I put all my childhood love of prankish little fairies with a hint of Marsupilami into Chango, so I could really have fun practising with expressive posing and explosive colours."

Well done to our young artists for these inspired and inspiring works!
