Animation Specializations Guide: Which Career Path Should You Choose?

The animation industry relies on a complete production pipeline that brings together both artistic and technical professionals. A 3D animation program is not about training for a single profession, but about building a solid foundation before choosing a specialization. This guide explains how the curriculum is structured at MoPA and explores its two main specialization tracks: the Image option and the Animation option.

How Is the 3D Animation Program Structured?

At MoPA, the 3D animation program is divided into two cycles over five years. A foundation year may also precede the program to help students develop the artistic and technical fundamentals required for success.

Cycle

Duration

Objective

Cycle 1

3 years

Build the core foundations of 3D animation.

Cycle 2

2 years

Develop advanced skills and specialize (Image or Animation track).

After completing the three years of Cycle 1, students choose their specialization for the final two years. The teaching approach is based on the production of team animation films, where each student takes on a specific role to develop technical expertise while building the collaboration and communication skills essential for working in a professional studio.

Cycle 2 Specializations: Image or Animation

Cycle 2 offers two specialization tracks, depending on whether students want to focus on creating the visual look of a film or bringing characters to life through animation.

Track

Focus

Main Modules

Image

Visual creation and look development

Concept art and character design, Substance Designer, grooming, cloth simulation, advanced 3D visual development (RenderMan), Houdini.

Animation

Character movement and acting

Rigging, posing, body mechanics (biped and quadruped), facial animation, emotional expression, lip sync, acting and body language.

The Image track is designed for students interested in visual development, materials, textures and final rendering. The Animation track is intended for those who want to bring characters to life through movement, acting and emotional performance.

Career Opportunities After the MoPA Animation Program

The program prepares students for careers across the three main stages of the production pipeline:

  • Pre-production: concept artist, character designer, storyboard artist...

  • Production: 3D modeler, rigger, 3D animator...

  • Post-production: lighting artist, FX artist, compositor...

Each specialization opens the door to several of these careers, whether in animated films, video games, advertising or motion design.

The Stop Motion Program

Alongside its 3D animation curriculum, MoPA also offers a dedicated three-year stop motion program. It focuses on building sets, creating puppets and mastering frame-by-frame animation using the traditional techniques of stop motion filmmaking.

FAQ

How long is MoPA's 3D Animation program?

The program lasts five years and is divided into two cycles: three years of core training, followed by two years of specialization. A foundation year may also precede the program.

When do students choose their specialization?

Students choose their specialization at the beginning of Cycle 2, after completing the three years of Cycle 1. This ensures they first acquire a broad understanding of the animation pipeline before selecting either the Image or Animation track.

What is the difference between the Image and Animation tracks?

The Image track focuses on visual development, including concept art, character design, texturing, grooming, cloth simulation, rendering and Houdini. The Animation track focuses on movement and performance, covering rigging, posing, body mechanics, facial animation, emotional expression and lip sync.

Does the program prepare students for working in a professional studio?

Yes. Producing team animation films places students in conditions that closely reflect professional studio production. The distribution of roles helps them develop both technical expertise and the collaborative skills expected in the animation industry.
