Rendering, Compositing and Lighting: What Are the Differences in 3D Animation Cinema?

When creating a 3D film, many different roles are involved before the images seen by audiences finally reach the screen. Among the key stages of 3D animation cinema, three terms frequently come up: lighting, rendering and compositing. They are closely connected, but each involves different processes and skills. So, what exactly is their purpose?

Where do lighting, rendering and compositing fit into the 3D film pipeline?

A 3D film is not created in a single step. Its production relies on a pipeline, in other words, a series of stages that transform an initial idea into the final images of the film.

Depending on the production and how a studio is organised, this pipeline can vary. However, it generally includes several key stages: scriptwriting, storyboarding, modelling, rigging, texturing, animation, lighting, visual effects, rendering and compositing.

Lighting, rendering and compositing therefore come into play once the characters, environments and animation have largely been created. Together, they play a direct role in transforming a 3D scene into a finished image.

  • Lighting shapes the light and atmosphere of the scene;
  • rendering processes the scene data to generate images;
  • compositing combines and harmonises the different elements to create the final image.

These three stages are therefore complementary. However, they serve different purposes and require specific skills.

Lighting: creating the light and atmosphere of a 3D scene

Before the final image can be rendered, the scene needs to be lit. This is the role of lighting.

Like a cinematographer on a live-action film set, a lighting artist uses light to highlight characters and environments, guide the viewer's eye and help create the atmosphere of a shot.

The same scene can convey very different feelings depending on how it is lit. Soft, diffused light can create a calm atmosphere, while highly contrasted lighting can increase tension or create a sense of mystery.

A lighting artist works on elements such as:

  • the position and intensity of light sources;
  • the direction of the light;
  • shadows;
  • contrasts;
  • reflections;
  • the depth and readability of the scene;
  • the visual atmosphere defined by the director and art direction team.

Lighting therefore combines technical expertise with artistic sensitivity. It is not simply about making objects visible: light plays an important role in storytelling and in conveying emotion throughout a film.

 

Rendering: generating the images of a 3D film

Once the scene has been prepared and lit, the next stage is rendering. Unlike lighting, rendering is not primarily about deciding how a scene should be illuminated. It is the computational process that transforms the information contained in a 3D scene into 2D images.

The rendering software takes into account elements such as object geometry, materials, textures, lights, shadows, reflections and camera settings to calculate the image.

This process can be particularly demanding. The more complex a scene is in terms of elements, effects, reflections or detail, the more computing resources may be required.

Rendering therefore acts as a bridge between the scene created within the 3D environment and the images that can then be processed during post-production.

In a professional pipeline, images can also be rendered as separate elements or passes. These provide greater flexibility when making adjustments during compositing.

 

Compositing: combining elements to create the final image

Once rendering is complete, the work on the image is not necessarily finished. Compositing is used to combine and harmonise the different elements produced in order to create a coherent final shot.

A compositing artist may work with multiple renders, visual effects, backgrounds or graphic elements. The image is then adjusted so that all these components work together as a whole.

Compositing can involve:

  • combining different render passes;
  • adjusting colours and contrasts;
  • adjusting light and certain shadows;
  • working on depth;
  • adding or refining atmospheric effects;
  • adjusting certain blurs, glows or visual effects;
  • integrating the different elements and ensuring visual consistency throughout the shot.

Compositing is therefore a key stage of post-production. It is where elements produced separately can be combined and refined to give the shot its final appearance, visual consistency and readability.

Lighting and compositing can therefore both influence how light is perceived, but they do so at different stages: lighting creates the illumination within the 3D scene, while compositing works on the resulting images to combine and finalise them.
