Internship at L’Horda Studio: a look back at Gabryël’s experience
MoPA: a professionalizing course
At MoPA, students take both theoretical and practical courses. In the 3D Animation program, courses are spread over five years following a preparatory year.
The first cycle, from the first to the third year, focuses on acquiring fundamental artistic skills and the production process of an animated film. The second cycle allows for further development and professionalization.
In this context, MoPA students complete an internship in various types of organizations. This is the case for Gabryël, who shared his experience with us.

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
My name is Gabryël AURY BACCHIERI, I have just finished my final year at MoPA and I am currently doing an internship at L'Horda Studio in order to validate my diploma.
Can you tell us about the company where you did your internship?
I did my internship at a young CGI studio called "L'horda". It's a small company made up of talented people, all more or less generalists. Their main productions are for advertising and fiction, particularly for series.

Why did you choose this company for your internship?
I had already completed a first internship at L'horda. It went very well, so I chose to do a second internship with them because they are highly competent and friendly professionals. I'm learning a great deal from them, while also really enjoying the work environment and the productions created there.
What was your position and your main responsibilities?
I was a Generalist Lighting/Rendering Intern. I usually focus on character/creature art, encompassing everything from modeling and sculpting to surfacing, look development, and grooming. Here, in addition to utilizing those skills, I also had to learn how to create high-quality lighting and be able to complete a project by producing an optimized, high-quality render.
I had several assignments and projects during the internship.
I started with several small exercises whose purpose was to assess my level and to ensure that I had the necessary basics before moving on to more advanced exercises such as rendering/lighting which I discovered during this internship.
What has struck you most about this world and the daily life of this profession?
Flexibility, attentiveness, and the necessary perspective are key. You really have to be able to put all your energy and passion into it. Paradoxically, you also have to maintain a healthy distance from your work. We receive a lot of customer feedback, and we need to be able to listen to it. Sometimes, we might think it's more or less justified, but in any case, our job is to satisfy the customer.
In your opinion, what are the essential qualities for success in this position?
A graphic designer must be an asset to the company, which means being both autonomous, and therefore possessing sufficient technical skills, but also knowing how to work well in a team. Furthermore, they must be able to listen to and take feedback into account, meaning they must be able to adapt to the demands of clients, or superiors, when necessary.
What types of projects have you had the opportunity to lead?
I have been able to work on many projects, including an advertisement for a perfume: a 20-second short film with many close-ups on different assets, shots of caustics etc... On this project, I was almost entirely autonomous, taking care of the framing, camera animations, film editing, creation, look development as well as the assets, lighting and rendering.

It was a very educational experience, especially since I had to meet a deadline and therefore manage my time effectively. I did, however, receive feedback from my superiors to ensure the final quality of the project.
What tools or software did you learn to use during this internship?
I didn't necessarily learn any new tools or software, but I really discovered more advanced and professional lighting/rendering techniques through this internship, whether it was using V-Ray or Arnold.
Did your internship allow you to acquire new skills?
As mentioned previously, I learned to do advanced lighting, regardless of the subject (cars, perfume, or simpler assets). I also learned to create different atmospheres, to light in fog, to do studio lighting, natural lighting, etc.

I've also improved my knowledge of rendering engines like V-Ray and Arnold. By understanding them better, I now know where to optimize my rendering times without sacrificing quality, or at least while always ensuring the quality/budget ratio is respected.
Did this internship confirm your career choice or did it make you want to explore other fields?
This internship confirmed my career choices, in that I truly want to become a 3D graphic designer and work on various productions, creating beautiful images and telling compelling stories. But it also sparked my interest in exploring other areas within the industry, such as lighting. It wasn't my original field, and yet, through this internship, I really learned to love it. It allowed me to rediscover why I initially wanted to work in 3D: creating a world and telling stories—which is exactly what lighting does. It's very creative, but also very technical, which is precisely what I'm looking for.
What advice would you give to future MoPA students looking for an internship?
Strive to continually expand your knowledge of 3D; be curious at all times. Don't settle for the bare minimum. Even if you experience periods of doubt, remain determined and open-minded. The connection you can forge with certain people, by demonstrating motivation, friendliness, and active listening, can open doors you never imagined.
Finally, what are your plans or aspirations for the next stage of your career after MoPA?
After MoPA and this internship, my aspirations remain the same: to become a skilled graphic designer working for studios that are committed to creating beautiful productions and stunning visuals, always striving to push boundaries.
A big thank you to Gabryël for sharing his experience. We wish him every success in his future career!
