Project Manager / Executive Producer: overseeing the production of an animated film

The executive producer plays a central role in the creation of an animated film. Acting as both a conductor, coordinator, and guarantor of the project's overall balance, they supervise the entire production process, from initial development to final delivery. In an industry where artistic, technical, and budgetary constraints are closely intertwined, this profession requires a broad vision and excellent anticipation skills. The executive producer ensures that the creative vision can be brought to life while respecting deadlines, budgets, and market requirements.

Responsibilities of the Executive Producer

The executive producer is involved in every stage of an animated film’s production. They coordinate artistic, technical, and administrative teams to ensure a smooth and coherent workflow.

Their main responsibilities include defining production schedules, allocating human and technical resources, and monitoring the progress of the various stages of the animation pipeline, from pre-production to post-production. They also oversee budget management, negotiate contracts, and ensure compliance with legal obligations and copyright regulations.

Working closely with the director and the art director, the executive producer supports creative decisions while ensuring their technical and financial feasibility. Once the film is completed, they may also contribute to distribution, promotion, and release strategies alongside producers and distributors.

Required Skills

The role of an executive producer requires a balance between technical expertise and interpersonal qualities. From a technical standpoint, they must master project management, have an in-depth understanding of the animation production pipeline, and possess a strong cinematic culture. Proficiency with production planning and tracking tools such as ShotGrid and other professional software is essential.

Soft skills play a decisive role. Executive producers must demonstrate leadership, rigor, and excellent organizational skills. Their ability to communicate, unite teams with diverse profiles, and manage pressure is crucial in an environment where deadlines are often tight.

The Role of AI and Digital Tools

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in production management. For executive producers, it serves as a decision-support tool. AI-powered solutions help optimize schedules, anticipate delays, analyze workloads, and improve communication between teams.

AI does not replace human expertise, but it facilitates the management of complex projects by providing a more accurate and responsive view of production challenges.
