Character Designer

Character designers create and give life to the protagonists in an animated film (characters, creatures, animals, etc.). So they have to design both their physical attributes and their personalities. Character designers express a character’s entire mental life through their overall appearance, stances and movements, facial expressions, clothing and accessories, etc.

Main goals

Each character is unique, so character designers have one of the most important jobs, which includes:
  • Finding inspiration by researching documents and images
  • Proposing a range of versions for each character
  • Drawing each character from different angles: front, profile, back, above, etc.
  • Figuring out each character’s physical traits: testing their facial expressions, trying on various accessories and outfits, etc.
  • Adjusting things according to the artistic director's feedback until they are finalised.

Required qualifications

Character designers must be able to adapt to each project and their technical constraints. Their skills mainly include:

  • Creativity
  • Curiosity
  • Strong analytical and outlining skills
  • Ability to work on a team
  • Detail-oriented
  • Perseverance
  • Excellent drawing skills (perspectives, volume, light, materials, anatomy)
