Rigger

When the modellers are done, riggers work on the 3D models. They apply a “digital skeleton” to models so they can be moved around in a realistic manner. Riggers establish control points and connections, and choose the axes of rotation for creating the desired movements.

Rigger: Preparing Characters for Animation

The rigger plays an essential technical role in the production of an animated film. They are responsible for creating the control systems that allow animators to bring characters and creatures to life. Rigging consists of designing a functional, flexible, and stable internal structure tailored to the artistic needs of the film. Without a high-quality rig, animation cannot be fluid or expressive.

Responsibilities of a Rigger

The rigger works after the character modeling stage. They create the skeletons, controllers, and deformations required for animation. Their goal is to provide animators with intuitive and efficient tools capable of producing natural movement.
They work closely with modelers, animators, and technical supervisors to adapt rigs to artistic requirements and production constraints. Riggers must also anticipate technical issues and optimize their systems to ensure the stability of the production pipeline.

Required Skills

This profession requires strong technical expertise and a solid understanding of movement. Riggers must master the principles of anatomy, deformation, and body mechanics.
Programming and scripting are often part of their skill set, along with a comprehensive understanding of the animation pipeline.
Precision, logical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to solve complex problems are essential.

The Role of AI and Digital Tools

Artificial intelligence can facilitate certain automation processes or accelerate the creation of basic structures. However, designing an efficient rig still relies on human expertise and a deep understanding of animators’ needs.

Testimonial

“Our graduation film, Louis' Shoes, created as a team project, won the Student Academy Awards and became Oscar-eligible. MoPA taught me the different professions within animation filmmaking, including rigging. Today, I work as a rigger in a professional studio.”

Théo, MoPA Graduate 2020, Rigger at Bluespirit Studio

How to Become a Rigger

A degree in animation filmmaking is often required to work in this profession. Recognized by industry professionals, the MoPA curriculum provides a comprehensive understanding of the animation pipeline and the technical challenges involved in animation production.
